What Is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian system of architecture and spatial design that dates back thousands of years. Rooted in Hindu philosophy and traditional building practices, it explores how the arrangement of space influences the flow of energy within a home or building.

The word "Vastu" can be translated as dwelling or living space, while "Shastra" means science, teaching, or body of knowledge. Together, Vastu Shastra offers guidelines for creating environments that support health, prosperity, harmony, and well-being.
At its core, Vastu is based on the belief that humans are deeply connected to the natural world. It considers the relationship between the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space—as well as sunlight, direction, and the movement of energy throughout a home.
While many people compare Vastu Shastra to Feng Shui, the Chinese practice of spatial harmony, Vastu developed independently in India and follows its own unique principles and traditions.
At CLRS, we believe a beautiful home is not about perfection. It is about creating a space that feels grounded, welcoming, and deeply personal. A home should reflect who you are and support the life you want to live.
Many of the textiles, colors, and traditions that inspire our collections come from cultures that view the home as a living environment filled with energy and intention. One of these traditions is Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian practice of designing spaces that encourage harmony, balance, and well-being.

The word Vastu is often associated with architecture and design, but at its heart, it is about creating an environment where energy flows naturally. The goal is simple: to create a home that feels nourishing, peaceful, and alive.
The Role of Prana in the Home
Central to Vastu Shastra is the concept of prana, often described as life force or vital energy. According to Vastu principles, a well-designed home encourages the smooth movement of prana through its rooms and gathering spaces. Natural light, fresh air, open pathways, plants, water, and mindful living are all believed to support this flow.
Whether viewed as spiritual wisdom, environmental psychology, or simply thoughtful design, many of these principles align with modern ideas about creating healthy and restorative living environments.
Bringing More Life Into Your Home
You don't need to redesign your entire house to create a sense of balance. Often, small changes have the greatest impact.
Open Your Windows
Fresh air instantly changes the feeling of a room. Open the windows whenever possible and allow natural breezes to move through your space. Fresh air clears stagnant energy and reconnects us to the outdoors.
Bring Nature Inside
One of the easiest ways to create a calming environment is by surrounding yourself with living things. Plants, fresh flowers, herbs, and natural materials help soften a space and bring a sense of vitality indoors.
Let the Light Move

Natural light has an incredible effect on mood. Keep pathways open, allow sunlight to travel through your home, and avoid overcrowding rooms with unnecessary furniture. Light creates energy and makes a space feel expansive.
Create Space to Breathe
Not every corner needs to be filled. Sometimes the most powerful design choice is leaving space open. A room with breathing room feels calmer, more intentional, and more welcoming.
Add Natural Elements
Water, wood, stone, cotton, linen, and handmade textiles all help create a connection to the natural world. Whether it's a vase of flowers, a bowl of water, or a hand-block printed curtain, these details contribute to a sense of balance.
Nourish Yourself Well
A sanctuary extends beyond furniture and decor. Fresh food, shared meals, and simple daily rituals all contribute to the energy of a home.
Create Moments of Stillness
Whether through meditation, prayer, reading, music, or simply enjoying a cup of tea by the window, moments of quiet help transform a house into a refuge.
Designing the Bedroom as a Place of Rest
Of all the rooms in the home, the bedroom may be the most important. It is where we recover, dream, and prepare ourselves for each new day.
Color plays a significant role in shaping how a bedroom feels.
Soft Pinks and Warm Rose Tones
These colors create a sense of warmth, comfort, and connection. They are gentle, inviting, and especially beautiful when paired with natural fabrics and soft lighting.
Greens Inspired by Nature
Green remains one of my favorite colors for the home. It brings the calming presence of nature indoors and encourages relaxation. Moss, sage, eucalyptus, and forest tones create bedrooms that feel peaceful and restorative.
Warm Earth Tones
Soft browns, clay colors, and natural neutrals help create a feeling of stability and grounding. These colors work beautifully with wood furniture, woven textures, and handcrafted pieces.

Golden and Amber Hues
Inspired by sunlight, marigolds, and traditional celebrations, warm golds bring optimism and comfort to a room without overwhelming the senses.
Soft Purples
Lavender, lilac, and muted plum shades have long been associated with tranquility and reflection. They add depth while maintaining a restful atmosphere.
A Home That Reflects You
There is no single formula for creating a sanctuary. Some people find peace in simplicity. Others find it in layers of color, collected treasures, and handmade textiles gathered over a lifetime.
At CLRS, we believe the most beautiful homes tell a story. They reflect the people who live there, the places they have traveled, and the experiences that have shaped them.
A sanctuary is not created in a day. It is built slowly, piece by piece, through thoughtful choices that bring comfort, beauty, and meaning into everyday life.
And perhaps that is the true purpose of home: not simply to shelter us, but to nurture us.
